Before labor begins, the midwife will educate you regarding how to recognize labor and
 when to call. When the midwives arrive at the birth they:

                           * Listen to the baby to assess it's well being
                           * Set up and check equipment
                           * Observe your contractions to see how advanced labor is
                           * Check the baby's position
                           * Check your vital signs
                           * Check your dilation if requested

                                           Throughout the labor we:

                           * Follow your birth plan
                           * Make sure you stay hydrated and well nourished
                           * Encourage you to rest while contractions permit
                           * Monitor the baby's well being
                           * Monitor the baby's position
                           * Monitor maternal vital sign
                           * Provide emotional support
                           * Suggest ways the father can provide labor support

The first few minutes immediately following the birth of your baby is a powerful bonding
 time so we leave these moments uninterrupted as we observe the transition of both mother
 and baby. Typically we stay between 2 and 4 hours postpartum unless there is a need for us
 to stay longer, during which we:

                                   * Deliver the placenta
                                   * Assist with breastfeeding
                                   * Check for any tearing
                                   * Suture if needed
                                   * Perform a thorough newborn exam
                                   * Help the mom up to urinate and shower
                                   * Monitor mom and baby's vital signs
                                   * Clean the birth site
                                   * Give verbal and written postpartum instructions
                                   * Set up a home visit

The midwives will come back to your home between 24 and 48   hours postpartum and
  then again between 3 and 5 days postpartum to:

                           * Assist with breastfeeding and any breast problems
                           * Check the baby's weight
                           * Do the newborn screening test, if desired
                           * Check mom and baby's vitals
                           * Check any sutures to make sure they are healing properly
                           * Answer any concerns
                           * Give the birth certificate paperwork and social security paperwork

We make daily phone calls for the first 8 days then we do two more postpartum home
  visits at 2 weeks and again at 6 weeks postpartum for the final visit.

While babies have all of the reflexes they need to breast feed, it is actually a learned
 behavior. Some mother and baby couples transition without a problem into a good
 breastfeeding relationship but for those who don't, Mobile Midwifery is very experienced in
 teaching breastfeeding and assisting with a variety of problems, generally starting with
 baby-led latching.

Mobile Midwifery is familiar with fertility awareness, natural family planning,
non-hormonal contraception, hormonal contraception, IUD's and IUS's and can help you
decide what method would best fit your needs at the end of your postpartum period.

              What is a Monitrice?
A Monitrice is a woman trained to provide support not only during childbirth but also
throughout the course of your pregnancy. A Monitrice is an experienced guide to offer
support and assistance to birthing couples by providing labor support, consumer advocacy
in the hospital and support in the home during the postpartum period.

This is an ideal service for women who want a VBAC in the hospital or who would prefer
a home birth but whose partner does not. The presence of a monitrice during labor allows
you to labor in whatever position you choose and to stay home as long as possible. The
further dilated you are before relocating to the hospital, the lower your chance of having an
epidural or Cesarean.

Our services are here to assist you in having the birth experience that you want.   An
important part of being a monitrice is helping you make decisions regarding your care that
YOU will be most satisfied with.

As a licensed midwife experienced in prenatal care, labor support, hospital transports,
consumer advocacy and in-home postpartum care, Mobile Midwifery is a perfect fit for
anyone desiring a hospital birth and personalized midwifery care.

                     Monitrice services consist of:

                           * A free consultation, no obligation to sign up
                           * Prenatal visits starting in the 3rd trimester
                           * Assistance writing a birth plan
                           * Monitoring of both mother and baby during labor
                           * Assessing cervical changes during labor
                           * Labor support in the hospital
                           * Consumer advocacy and education in the hospital
                           * Two in-home postpartum visits

The prenatal visits are intended to expand and supplement those of your primary health
care provider. We educate, nurture, and prepare you physically and emotionally for birth.
Your monitrice will come to your home when you are in labor and feel you want her
support and input. Once there, she will monitor your vital signs and the baby's heart rate,
assist with comfort measures and encouragement. She can also check for cervical changes
and advise you of when you may need to go to the hospital. Your monitrice will follow you
to the hospital and stay throughout the delivery and early postpartum to provide advocacy
and labor support. She will then visit you twice in your home to provide assistance with
breastfeeding support, answer any questions and check your vitals signs and the vital signs
and weight of your baby.
